Blog v Wiki
Blogs and wikis are both products of
new media that provide information to one reading it; however, there are some
key differences. A blog is basically an online journal that allows for a single
person to voice their news. A business owner could share news on
their business, or a sports athlete could share news on the team. These blogs
are mostly for personal use therefore, not everyone has access to make changes or
create their own story; however, could create a discussion by leaving comments.
A wiki on the other hand provides more access to add, edit or remove information
anytime one wants. Groups could coordinate their assignments/activities easily
with a click of a button. Even though they might be different, they both are
beneficial new medias that play a role in convergence in today’s networked world.
Blogs and wikis are two ways that permit one to express/promote themselves
which in turn, allows them to network and get their names and thoughts out to
more people.
Blogs in today’s
society could be a very powerful instrument, due to its ability to spread “news”
to many different people quickly. In the New York Times article, “Wal-Mart
Tastemakers Write Unfiltered Blog,” by Michael Barbaro, it shows how important they
could be in creating a business to consumer collaboration. Barbaro states, “that
instead of relying on polished high-level executives, it is written by
little-known buyers, largely without editing.” This is important because as big
as Walmart is, it could be easy to lose sight of what their customers might
want. However, with the collaboration of the blog, everyday buyers are allowed
to comment and give an input on what they would like to see.
Likewise, wikis
are also a very important form of media that allows for collaboration. In the
article, “More on How to Build Your Own Wikipedia,” by Margaret Locher, she describes
how it could be used to help companies. Locher states Michele Hovet, IT
director for the city of Arvada, Colo, hopes their implementation of a wiki
would allow all employees to participate in conversations about various topics
that affect the city. Using the nonrestrictive wiki technology would allow for a
growth in collaboration in the company. This would improve the amount of
information collected and create an efficient method of discussing various
topics.
A new use for
a wiki that I believe has not been done yet is if there would be one for people
to add in different cooking techniques or recipes. Unlike YouTube one could
just post any question or recipe instantly and connect with people all around
the world. This would improve networking and collaboration between societies.
